Natural Moisturizing Factors: Your Skin’s Very Own Moisturizer

Is your skin dry and/or dehydrated right now?

If so, here’s a little tip that most people don’t know…

Your skin produces something called Natural Moisturizing Factors, which is your skin’s very own, custom-made, just-for-you moisturizer. Natural Moisturizing Factors are made up of your skin’s own sebum, amino acids, lactic acid, hyaluronic acid… this list goes on.

When your bare skin is in direct contact with its environment, your skin measures the level of humidity that’s in the air. When the air is really dry (lacking moisture), like it is in the winter months, your very own skin will start producing its very own Natural Moisturizing Factors in order to moisturize itself and stay balanced.

However, when you use thick, rich creams, they block your skin’s ability to measure the humidity in the air, so your skin won’t know to produce the Natural Moisturizing Factors required for healthy balance. When you use these products, your skin will feel content while that thick, rich cream is on, however, the moment you don’t have the product on, your skin is going to feel super dry, because it does not know to produce the Natural Moisturizing Factors that it needs. These creams prevent your skin from being in direct contact with its environment. This creates product dependency, which is great for sales of the companies who make them, but not good for your skin!!

So, what do you do instead?

Use a light, breathable oil, like Sacred Calm Soothing Oil Cleanser + Moisturizer, that absorb quickly into the skin, while nourishing your skin with essential fatty acids and nutrients, but still also allowing your skin to breathe and be in contact with its environment. Even Winter Saviour Soothing Face Balm will still allow your skin to function as it’s meant without any disruption. Your skin will be able to measure the humidity levels within its environment and create its own Natural Moisturizing Factors to stay healthy and balanced. Your skin will feel much more content, even when the product is not on your skin.

We want to avoid product dependency, especially during the drier months of year, and that goes for your lips too!!
