Morning Routine

I do not recommend cleansing in the morning. The skin is a delicate organ that is fully capable of cleansing, exfoliating and moisturizing itself. The more that we do to it, the more we risk aggravating it and disrupting these natural processes. The purpose of a skin care routine should be to provide support and encourage the skin’s natural functioning. When we cleanse our skin at night, we wake up in the morning with clean skin. There’s no need to cleanse it again. We have a very delicate protective barrier on the surface of the skin that is vital for our skin’s health. This barrier is made up of our natural oils, sweat and dead skin cells. While we’ve been conditioned to think these 3 components are bad and should be removed, our natural oil, sweat and dead skin cells are very necessary for healthy skin, so we want to allow them all to serve their purpose. Cleansing once a day is sufficient. I promise!

  • Splash some water on your face, or apply a damp cloth to your skin in order to moisten and soften your skin cells. This will allow your oils in the next steps to absorb into your skin more effectively.
  • Gently mist your face and neck with Garden Mist Rose Geranium Hydrosol.
  • Apply 1 drop of Bright Soul Eye + Eyelash Serum around each eye. You can also apply it right up into your eyebrows for fuller eyebrows.
  • Apply 2-3 pumps of Sacred Light Revitalizing Face Oil and massage it into the skin. This is a really ideal time to perform the Daily Self Massage (video tutorial below).
  • If you find you need additional moisture, you can layer with Sacred Glow Moisturizing Beauty Balm.
  • If you wear sunscreen, your sunscreen will now be applied on top of the moisturizing routine as the last step of your morning routine.

Evening Routine

  • Oil Cleansing: Apply 3-4 pumps of Sacred Garden Revitalizing Cleansing Oil to dry skin. Wet your fingertips and massage into skin for a minimum of 60 seconds to lift away makeup, dirt and debris, and stimulate blood flow.
  • Using a warm, damp cloth, gently wipe your face to remove your cleansing oil.
  • If you wear heavy makeup, a double cleanse might be necessary. In this case, please repeat the steps above.
  • Gently mist your face and neck with Garden Mist Rose Geranium Hydrosol.
  • Apply 1 drop of Bright Soul Eye + Eyelash Serum around each eye. You can also apply it right up into your eyebrows for fuller eyebrows.
  • Apply 1-2 pumps (please note that this is less than your morning routine amount – see the evening tip section below for this explanation) of Sacred Light Revitalizing Face Oil and massage it into your skin. If you did not perform your Daily Self Massage during your morning routine, perform it now. You can find the video tutorial for this massage below.

Evening Tip:
I do not recommend using a lot of face oil in the evening, and I also do not recommend using face balm at all at night time. I know this goes against what the beauty industry will tell you, but your skin will function better without it at night. While we sleep, our skin repairs, regenerates and exfoliates itself. If we have thicker amounts of oil or balms on the skin, they can disrupt this natural biological process. 1-2 pumps of Sacred Light is sufficient as your night time moisturizer. It quickly absorbs into the skin, so it will not disrupt your skin’s nightly repair process.

Daily Self-Massage

The products will reset your skin on the outside, and my Daily Massage for Healthy Skin will help improve your skin health from the inside-out.

The skin that we treat topically with skin care products is only 0.1 mm thick, and it’s underneath this layer of skin where all of the life occurs:

  • blood circulation that brings nutrients and fresh oxygen to the skin
  • lymphatic flow to help remove cellular waste and toxins from the skin cells
  • connective tissue, where collagen and elastin are produced and hydration is stored

These layers of skin can be encouraged and supported through gentle massage, which is why, at Her Soul Intention Skin Care, I am so adamant about adding self massage into your daily topical skin care routine.

When you combine your topical skin care routine with daily self massage, your skin will dramatically improve from the inside-out. Your skin tone will even out and I ensure you that your skin will even begin to naturally glow overtime.

I created the Daily Self Massage for the Face and Neck for you. I recommend performing this massage once a day, every day, or as often as you can. It’s only five minutes long and will really help to improve the natural functioning of your skin.

To begin the massage, apply a little Sacred Light, take some deep breaths into your belly, and enjoy some much needed self touch, while improving the appearance and the natural functioning of your skin.

Inner Work and Lifestyle Recommendations for Supporting Healthy Aging

Innerwork to Self Acceptance Through Self Inquiry

Aging in our current world is an interesting experience, isn’t it? We are all aging, and yet so many women feel so insecure about themselves when they look in the mirror.

I am not enough is a common belief within most of the women in our society. Let’s work on shifting that!

If I were to look within your DNA, I would not find it written anywhere, “This one is not loveable, youthful enough, or good enough”, would I?

Those are just stories that you made up about yourself, based on our society’s toxic conditioning and unrealistic expectations.

None of it is true though.

You are perfect as you are!

If you have the belief, “I am not ____ (fill in the blank) enough”, I invite you to take a journey through self-inquiry. Open your journal, and answer the following questions. Go as deeply into these questions, and as deeply into yourself as you possibly can, to really question and dissolve your beliefs. If you do this exercise as in-depth as you can, you should soon realize that none of the negative beliefs that you are have about yourself are true!

1. According to who?
If you have this belief, according to who are you not good enough? Do the people around you tell you that you’re not good enough, or is this belief your own? If others make you feel this way, ask if that’s really true. Or is it that YOU have this belief about yourself, and you’re over-analyzing what happens around you, while using that to subconsciously validate your belief?

2. Is it true in this moment?
Where is your proof? Most of our subconscious beliefs stem from our past experiences, usually in childhood. And most of the time, the story that we made up in our subconscious mind about the particular situation(s) is not the reality of the present moment, yet we hold onto these beliefs our entire lives, and self-sabotage ourselves, our goals and our relationships because of it.

3. How does owning this belief, cause me to act in my day to day life?
Most of us who have this belief will subconsciously hold ourselves back in relationships, from success and from reaching our highest desires, goals and potential because we believe we’re not loveable or worthy enough. Where does this unhelpful belief hold you back?

4. How would my life be different without this belief?
Once you consciously recognize where this belief is holding you back, now consider how your life would be different without this belief. If you had the highest self-worth, and believed you truly were good enough, who would you be? How would you act? What would change?

5. What is holding me back from being this version of me now?
Once you consciously recognize where this belief is holding you back, and who you would be, and how you act without this belief, ask yourself this question. Also recognize that no one is truly holding you back from becoming that person right now, aside from you!

Stress Less | Resolve What is Unresolved

There is no denying that when someone is going through a period of stress in their lives, that they tend to age quicker during that time – bags and dark circles under the eyes, lacklustre skin, and fine lines.

When we are stressed, our sympathetic nervous system (fight or flight) becomes activated, and the body begins to adapt in order to help you cope, resolve and survive the stress. When our sympathetic nervous system is overactive:

  • collagen and elastin breakdown and cannot work efficiently
  • heart beat and blood pressure increase
  • breath becomes shallow
  • digestion and digestive enzyme production drastically slow down
  • lack of ability to absorb sufficient nutrients
  • liver health and enzyme production decrease
  • the lymphatic system becomes compromised
  • adrenaline, cortisol and blood pressure rise
  • poor sleeping habits or insomnia

Reading through this list, I’m sure you can understand why we age more rapidly during times of stress. While some stress is normal and might be hard to avoid, the majority of stress that we deal with in today’s world isn’t mandatory nor necessary.

Become really conscious of what’s causing stress in your life, and resolve every aspect of your life that is unresolved in order to create more ease within your mind, and allow your body to move into a state of healing, instead of a state of breakdown.

Sleep Well

At night time while you are sleeping, your body heals and regenerates, so getting plenty of sleep is vital for healthy aging. It is a nighttime that we move into the parasympathetic nervous system, so long as our body is in homeostasis. Your body is only capable of doing its healing work while you are in your parasympathetic nervous system, which is why the above suggestion, resolving what’s unresolved, is so vital.

While you are in the parasympathetic nervous system:

  • collagen and elastin production is stimulated
  • heart beat and blood pressure decrease
  • breath becomes slower and deeper
  • digestion and digestive enzyme increase
  • liver health and enzyme production increase
  • adrenaline, cortisol and blood pressure decrease
  • better quality sleep

All of this happens while you sleep. Your lymphatic system also works to remove cellular waste and toxins from your skin cells and body.

If you want to age gracefully, be sure to get at least 7-9 hours of sleep each night. If you have trouble sleeping, practice breathwork (see below), exercise to burn up energy and exhaust your body, and avoid drinking caffeine too close to bedtime.

When I started my own healing journey, my nervous system was working overtime. I was stressed, anxious, having trouble sleeping, had digestive and hormonal imbalances and a long list of other health symptoms. For several months, I went from doctor to doctor, getting referred to specialists, natural practitioners, and beyond, and no one could figure out what was “wrong” with me.

It wasn’t until I was introduced to the nervous system and its vital importance in our overall health, that I began to study everything there was to know about this system. And through this research and studying, I was introduced to breathwork.

Of all of the breathwork exercises and different kinds of breathwork that I practice, this exercise is the one that I use the most. It is super quick and simple to perform, yet it’s so powerful and can immediately shift the nervous system into a state of calm.

You can use it anytime you need to in order to bring your nervous system out of fight or flight and into a state of calm, or at night time before sleep. I bet this exercise will quickly become one of your go-to self care practices too.

Stay Hydrated

In order to function optimally, your skin cells need plenty of water and hydration. This helps your skin cells obtain the oxygen and nutrients they need, as well as get rid of cellular waste and toxins.

The best way to hydrate your skin is through “living water”, which is water that comes from plants, fruits and vegetables. This is unaltered water, combined with the appropriate minerals, that is needed for your body to effectively absorb the water.

Most of the water that we drink today is not whole because it is altered from heavy duty sterilization and cleaning. Because of this, our bodies do not absorb water as much as they should.

Here are some great ways to stay hydrated:

  • Drink filtered water
  • Avoid drinking distilled water – your body needs the minerals in order to hydrate
  • Add some lime and a pinch of sea salt to your water
  • Drink decaf herbal teas, coconut water and fresh squeezed fruit juices (the sugar that comes from fruit is not the same as refined sugar – natural fruit glucose is actually vital for brain health)
  • Eat high water content fruits and veggies, like watermelon, melon, cucumber, and apples
  • Limit caffeine and alcohol, which can dehydrate the body

Healthy Aging Routine

Eat Whole Foods

Eating whole foods means eating a diet full of foods that are in their original state and come straight from nature – fresh organic fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and fresh, organic, local meat. Your body needs plenty of vitamins, minerals and proteins in order to heal, regenerate, detoxify and function optimally.

Diets that are too full of processed foods and empty calories do not provide the body with the sufficient nutrients needed to function optimally and age gracefully.

Daily Movement

Daily movement, like walking, weight lifting, and other forms of exercise help to strengthen your muscles and keep them firm throughout your life, especially as you age. In fact, it is proven that people who weight train through lifting light weights and walk daily have less physical ailments, more energy and vitality into their later years, and even have a longer life expectancy.

Movement is also vital for a healthy lymphatic system. Your lymphatic system plays a really vital role in your overall health. The lymphatic system is the drainage system of the body. The lymphatic system and circulatory actually work together, but there’s one major difference between the two systems. Our circulatory system has the heart which pumps the blood around. Without the heart, the blood wouldn’t be able to move through the body in the way that it does. Unlike the circulatory system, the Lymphatic System has no pump, so lymph fluid does not get pumped around automatically. Considering the lymphatic system plays such a vital role in our health, it’s really important that that fluid be pumped around the body, so that means it’s up to us to get it pumping by stimulating it daily. That means that the choices that we make each day have a huge impact on the functioning of the lymphatic system and our overall body health and skin health. Did you know that? Most people don’t!

There are only two ways to stimulate the lymphatic system:

  • Movement, and
  • Diaphragmatic breathing, also known as deep belly breathing

This means that exercise is vital for your overall health, skin health and healthy aging journey!
